Productive Families in Riyadh
In Saudi Arabia, families have changed significantly in terms of fertility indicators like total fertility rate (TFR) and marital behavior indicators such as delayed first marriage and not having children despite being able to (OECD, 2011). These changes influence the structure, composition and function of household. Hence, understanding family dynamics becomes important for understanding the Kingdom’s social and economic development.
Consequently, the family is the main source of support for its members and the basis of many individuals’ social circles. It also has a strong hold over people’s lifestyles and values, including traditional norms regarding family relationships, generations, elderly, women’s roles, men’s obligations, authority, etc. (see Core Concepts). Moreover, individuals are expected to sacrifice their interests for the sake of the family’s needs.
This article analyzes the role and impact of family businesses in Saudi society, with an emphasis on the emergence of Productive families as a new economic activity that combines family business and marketing in order to promote the production of goods and services through the use of modern technology. The analysis is conducted through an online survey involving a sample of 921 consumers of food from FTs owned by productive families. The data were collected using Qualtrics, an online tool that allows survey design, distribution, and response analysis from a single location. The results show that the majority of culinary professionals from hotels, ordinary restaurants, and heritage restaurants had between one and nine years of experience working in the hospitality industry. محل اسر منتجة
